Academy of Choral Arts, Moscow

The Academy of Choral Arts, Moscow was founded in 1991 by Professor Viktor Popov, as a perpetuation and modernization of the Moscow Choral College, established in 1944 by Alexander Sveshnikov and led since 1970 by Professor Popov. Whereas the Moscow Choral College admitted boys and young men only, the Academy has expanded to include musical instruction to young women (from age 18) as well. Beyond musical subjects such as solfege, theory, voice instruction, choral conducting and music history, the Academy also includes liberal arts studies such as foreign languages, philosophy, history, aesthetics, religion, etc. Today the Academy includes some 400 singers, with a separate Boys’ Chorus, Youth Chorus, Mixed Adult Chorus and Men’s Chorus – the latter featured in several of the recordings found here at the Classical Archives.

The Academy, like the Choral College before it, specializes in reviving early Russian religious music, but is equally at home performing contemporary choral works, by composers such as Shostakovich, Kikta and Dmitriev, as well as choral arrangements of Russian folk songs – all featured here at the Archives. The Academy choir has appeared in numerous high-profile festivals and concerts in Russia, Austria, Germany and France – including several opera productions, and has produced more than 35 CDs. We are delighted to offer a rich sampling of this outstanding Russian choir.
